It is not a fuel additive or alternative fuel, AdBlue is stored in its own tank on the vehicle chassis and injected into the hot exhaust gas after the engine.

This pollution control system is called SCR (selective catalytic reduction) and is used in the majority of new commercial vehicles to reduce Nitrous Oxides (NOx) emissions.
